St John’s Chronicle, Rocktober 8, 2009

Dear St. John’s Community:

May the blessings of our Lord be upon you and your families!

The change of weather has led us to think about all the exciting Fall activities that lie ahead. Please stay tuned to our Chronicles in the next couple of weeks to stay abreast of all these events.

Growing in Faith. An important element of our Catholic faith is the knowledge of our prayers. Every month we “showcase” a particular prayer during our intercom Gospel and prayer reading in the morning for grades 2-8. Last month’s prayer was the Morning Offering. This month’s prayer is The Memorare. All students are given a prayer card so that they can follow along as we say the prayer over the intercom. I invite you to ask your student about this month’s prayer and see if they can recite it. It is very impressive to hear our older students reciting these very beautiful prayers!

School Community Gatherings. I’d like to thank all of you who have been participating in the “Brown Bag with the Teachers” this year. It is a delight to see all of you who come in to speak with the teachers. As a reminder, on the second Wednesday of each month the teachers will be in their rooms for their lunch break to chat with parents.

We have an exciting new event coming up! On October 26th, we will be holding a “Pinning Ceremony” to celebrate the co-curricular activities in the school. At the ceremony we will be honoring all of those students that participate in our school co-curricular activities, such as Speech, Student Council, Math Counts, Safety Patrol, and our National Junior Honor Society and National Elementary Honor Society. The event will take place at 2:15 and is a school-wide event. Parents are welcome to attend and honor our incredible St. John’s students.

Last reminder… Boots & Bordeaux ! Next week…October 16th from 7-9pm on the school fields across from the school. Babysitting will be provided in the gym and the suggested donation is $5 per child. The cost for tickets in advance is $15 for individuals and $25 for a couple. Come sample some amazing wines provided by Gateway Liquors – and pre-order your bottles or cases of wine for the holidays. All profits go directly to our Teachers’ Fund. Tickets may be purchased at the Front Office and during the upcoming week in the Loop. See ya’ll there!

Building Community. The Halloween Carnival on October 24th is swiftly approaching –this is the can’t-miss event for the Fall! Check out upcoming Chronicle information for details. We are in need of volunteers for this community event – it’s a fun way to fulfill your volunteer hours obligation to the school. There will be a pumpkin carving contest – all entries may be brought to the school on October 23rd, and the winners will be announced at the carnival. I hope to see you all there!

School Tips and Updates. We are implementing a new tardy procedure. If students enter the rotunda after 8:05, they will be handed a tardy slip. I know that the morning drop off does take time – so I would ask all parents who are dropping off to please have the students “ready to roll” when their car pulls up…please have backpacks on and have your good-byes done so that the students can exit quickly and keep the Loop flowing.

A useful tip… please have your family’s name on your dashboard in the Loop. It really does help to expedite the Loop process if we can have a name to write down and call out quickly. My goal is to have the Loop process take less than 15 minutes, but precious time has been lost by not having names on the dashboard to help out our hard-working Loop staff.

With the cold weather and the increasing need to wear sweatshirts and fleece jackets, our Lost and Found area has become a popular destination point for these articles of clothing. We have many sweatshirts and fleece jackets that are missing their owners! Please be sure to label your student’s clothing so that they can find their way back to their owners.

School-Parish Connection. Did you know that our students go to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday? Our students in grades K-8 attend Adoration every Thursday. We invite all parents to attend Adoration with our school.

Finally, “Quarter Cookie Friday” is back! Our Student Council will be selling chocolate chip cookies every Friday at lunch for a quarter. Ten percent of this fundraiser will be donated back to the Parish – so bring a quarter and help support our Student Council and our Parish!

I hope that you have a safe and relaxing weekend. The school families remain in my constant prayers – may God bless you and keep you safe!

Blessings,
Dr. Sara Amodio

CALLED TO PROTECT
Later this month your child will be presented a classroom training titled “Called to Protect.” Each grade has a specific lesson plan that is age appropriate. This specific training was designed with K-8th graders as the targeted audience. Additional printable information on this program can be accessed through the Office of Child and Youth Protection hyperlink at the Archdiocese of Denver website www.archden.org.
As the primary educator of your child you always have the right to opt out of this type of training. If you would like to request this, please sign and date the form sent home with your child or posted on the website and return it to the school by October 16, 2009.

Closeout concession Sales
The boosters club will be having a closeout concession sale after school all of next week. All proceeds will go toward the volleyball game balls for next season. While supplies last.

EXTENDED DAY UPDATE
The students in Extended Day have been busy making cards, bookmarks and banners for the Homebound of the Parish, The Sterling House ( Assisted Living Facility where some St John Parishioners reside ), and to the Military Overseas. This is all a part of this school years Service project.
We are looking to make goodie boxes to go along with their letters of good cheer. We have been telling the children to help by doing an extra chore at home to help pay for the following suggested donations…
Yogurt filled Granola Bars and Mini Candy Bars the Sterling House said they use for Bingo Prizes. Beef Jerky and Assorted Candy for the service Men and Women. If you are unable to at this time then we so would simply Love Your Prayers! Mary Haigh haighma@saintjohns.net 635-5875
