Walk-A-Thon News
The weather held up and our annual Walk A Thon was a success. Father Garcia led us in prayer as each student carried their prayer intention along the walk. Runza provided an excellent lunch and strawberry smoothies.

Thank you to the Walk A Thon committee; Helen Franks, David Snodgrass, Lexy Donnelly, Cindy Heesemann, Jessica May, Sarah Bond, Ella Kaiser, Michelle Stansbury, Rose Walsh, Jackie McKay, Christina Pope, Cade Luce and all of the other people that helped make this happen. You all did a fabulous job!





Fillpot Fundraiser Reminder
If you purchased or sold certificates for the Fillpot Photographic Art Fundraiser in September, this is a reminder that you need to have your photo session completed before the end of May. Please call the Fillpots at 593-9430 to schedule your appointment. Also, call your friends and family that have also purchased the certificates to remind them that they will expire on May 31st. The lilacs will be in full bloom this month and will make a beautiful backdrop for your family photo. If you have any questions, please call the Fillpots or Jessica May at 667-2177.

ENDOW
Attention all women of the parish: ENDOW is coming to St. John’s Church. ENDOW is an educational program that brings women together to discover their God-given dignity and to understand their role in humanizing and transforming society. ENDOW utilizes small study groups, conferences and retreats to cultivate faith, fellowship and formation. There will be an informational meeting on Monday May 17th at 7:00 PM in the Church basement for all interested women. Please come to this informational meeting to learn more. CONCERT UPDATE
Thanks so much to those of you who donated to our "Harmony for Haiti" Choir Concert last week. We received $100 along with many, delicious desserts!! The choir sang beautifully and had a great time!

Scrip News
Thank you for your dedicated support of the scrip program. Remember for this year, a $150 minimum profit must be met before you receive the 50% scrip rebate. Any scrip purchased through 6/30/10, will still be considered for this years scrip rebate. Then on July 1st, start buying for the next school year – we’ll already begin counting those purchases for the 10/11 school year.

Some new vendors have been added to the scrip program. They are Max Muscle ($50 denominations) and Dairy Delite ($5 denominations). These local stores run by parish families, see the value of this program and want to be part of this fundraiser to help the church. Profits from the scrip program help both the church and the school, and imagine what could be accomplished if every parishioner made a scrip purchase at least once a month (and buying scrip is a great budgeting tool).

Scrip is always available to buy at weekend masses and the parish office year-round, and the school office during the school year. Please contact the scrip coordinator by email: dorothea.boettcher@saintjohns.net with questions, suggestions or to volunteer to help sell scrip.



K-4 Book Club:

The K-4 Book Club will hold its last meeting of the school year on Tuesday, May 11. We will NOT be meeting in the Eagle's Nest that day. Instead, we are having an end-of-year party. Please join us for the following:

Start your spring cleaning. St. John’s will be hosting our 2nd annual garage sale and bake sale and need your help to make it a success. 100% of proceeds go back to St. John’s athletics. Last year we raised $1100, far more than we anticipated because of all the generous item donations. We are adding a bake sale this year. If you would like to drop off a baked good this can be done anytime May 7th-9th. Donated items can be dropped off in the loop May 3-6, at the walk-a-thon May 6, or during set-up May 7. Saint John's 2nd Grade Knitting Service Project

Mrs. Martinek’s 2nd grade class undertook a year long service project in 2009-2010. The 2nd grade class learned the skill of knitting. Using this skill each second grader knitted a partial square to one or more squares during their free time to make a beautiful afghan that was donated to the McKee Cancer Center. The title of the afghan was “On Eagles Wings”. The children were encouraged to pray as they knitted and to remember the people that would be benefiting from this project, cancer patients and their families need our prayers. Each person at sometime in their lives if they have not already, they will be affected by cancer in their lives or someone they know. We wanted to share our love with those in need.
This project was cross curricular as it not only focused on our religious curriculum of service by the students; it reinforced basic number sense skills such as counting, adding and subtracting, and measurement.
The culmination of our project was on April 30, 2010, when we delivered our completed “On Eagles Wings” afghan to the McKee Cancer Center. The students were welcomed with a reception and were given a tour of the new chapel at McKee Hospital. And as one student said, “The best part of this project was learning about how to help and pray for people with cancer.”

4th Annual Walk A Thon

Hello St. John's families!

Our 4th annual Walk-A-Thon is tomorrow! Here are a few important details you'll need to know:
• We will be meeting at Old Fairgrounds Park immediately after early dismissal. The Walk will start at approximately 12:30 p.m.
• If you've ordered Walk-A-Thon T-shirts, they will be coming home with your oldest child today. Please make sure your children wear their T-shirts to school on Thursday.
• Please be prepared for inclement weather -- we're never sure what the weather will do from one moment to the next, so make sure your children bring jackets, sunscreen, umbrellas, etc.
• Please stop at the registration table first to pick up your meal tickets (if you've ordered a Runza meal) and the intentions your family will be praying for. This year, you will not be able to get your lunches without a meal ticket.
• It's not too late to send out your donation letters and cards! We're only halfway to our goal of raising $25,000, and we need every family's help to accomplish our goal. You can print out letters and cards from St. John's website -- just go under the Parent Resources tab, and the link to the Walk-A-Thon page is on the left.

Welcome to the last day in April, everyone! Is it possible that tomorrow we will be looking at May and truly toward the end of another school year?

Since May is the month of we dedicate to Mary, “Our Blessed Lady” Monday, May 3, we will begin our day with the crowning of the “Queen of Heaven”. Please send flowers with your child to place at her feet during this prayer service.

A Poem of Faith

The Lord God has provided us with all that we will need,
He has given us our talents to be sure that we’ll succeed,
He guides us with a gentle hand in times when we’re afraid,
And helps us stay determined when our strength begins to fade,
He travels every path with us as it curves and bends each day
And He simply asks that we follow Him and trust He knows the way.

After just one week being back with all of you here at Saint Johns, this poem
has been my prayer. It has been a very good week. The self discipline, mannerly, and
happy students guided by a most dedicated faculty and staff along with caring and invested parents is exactly as I found this special school two years ago when
I joined you.

It has been a busy, busy week with a SAC meeting, a PTO meeting and a lengthy
Finance Committee Meeting. It is such a blessing to work with such “God
given talented and capable people.” Again, I thank you and am so appreciative
for all of the help, patience and support I have been given to help me “Get Back in the
Saddle Again”.

TALENT SHOW TRYOUTS
April 28th after school in Mrs. Kula’s room. The talent show will be on June 2nd at 1:30 PM in the gym. All parents are welcome to join us.


WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD
a Choir Concert on April 22nd at 7PM in the Eagle’s Nest. We are charging $5 for adults. The proceeds will go to our service project (Haiti). We are also asking for dessert donations, which will be served after the concert. We look forward to seeing you there - You will see quite a variety of TALENTS!

CUB SCOUT RECRUITING FOR BOYS K TO 3RD GRADE:
Parents of boys interested in joining our St. John's, Pack 81, Cub Scouts please plan to attend an informational meeting Wednesday, May 5th at 6pm in the school cafeteria.


K-4 Book Club
Please join us for our next book club meeting for kindergarten through fourth grade students next Tuesday, April 13, 3:00-4:15 PM, in the Eagle's Nest. Vivian Tapp from Barnes & Noble will be giving book talks on a range of books that might be of interest to our readers. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend.

Students should bring their completed bookmarks (which we handed out at last month's meeting). If your student was unable to attend last month, but would like to attend next Tuesday, that is wonderful! Invite your child to read a book of their choosing, and then create a bookmark where they record words that capture their attention, complete with the page number where they found each word.

Also, we are planning an end-of-year book club party at Barnes & Noble. More details to come!

PTO News

We are looking for some new recruits for PTO. There are lots of positions within the PTO (and will be up for election soon, but in order to function, we need a select group of people to serve on the executive committee. These are year long positions that last from July 1 – June 30. We are looking to hold elections for the executive committee to get some fresh perspective and ideas to the PTO. Please read through the 4 executive positions and think about whether you might possess some skill or talent that could make our PTO bigger, brighter and better than ever.
Chair: The Chair presides over all meetings of the PTO common and that of the PTO executive committee. He/she also recruits committee members and delegates responsibilities as necessary to fulfill the function of PTO. The Chair is an ex-officio member of SAC (School Advisory Council) and should attend such meetings and other PTO committee meetings as necessary. He/she shall ensure that the by-laws as adopted are followed.
Co-Chair: The Co-chair, in the absence of the chair, shall perform all the duties of the Chair. The Co-chair shall serve as Chair-elect for the following school year. The Co-chair shall act as historian to archive newspaper articles and photographs and maintain the PTO section of the website. He/she shall coordinate the Saint John’s Catholic School Information fair and/or Back to School Night as needed.
Secretary: The Secretary keeps minutes of the PTO at all the meetings both common and executive gatherings. He/she also keeps a contact list of all board members. Secretary presents the minutes for approval or correction. He/she shall notify all members of organization meetings and handle all correspondence as requested such as Thank you notes and fliers.
Treasurer: The Treasurer accounts for all monies of the PTO. Purchase Orders for money spent are approved and submitted to the Business Office for payment to vendors. Money received is counted and remitted to the Business Office for deposit. Monthly the Treasurer obtains the detail list of PTO revenue and expense recorded by the Business Office that month, verifies their accuracy and presents monthly financial reports at regular PTO meetings. The Treasurer works with the Business Office and the PTO Chair to establish an annual PTO budget each May. The Treasurer also coordinates with fundraising event chairs and other PTO members to assist with the financial aspect of fundraisers and community social events and answers questions related to the receipt of cash and payment of invoices.
If you are interested in fulfilling any of these positions, please submit a short bio about yourself, the position you seek and why you want the position next year, so we may compile a ballot and hold an official election just after spring break. Dear St. John's families-

I'd like to share this incredible article with you as we head into the season of Lent. The article in Catholic Digest is written by Jim McDaniel, a dear friend of mine and former fellow parishioner. http://www.catholicdigest.com/articles/good_works/love_your_neighbor/2010/01-29/haiti-changed-our-parishhellipand-my-life

In Lent, too often we focus on what we are to "give up", what we will deny ourselves. But this comes at the expense of asking ourselves what we can do more of - what Christ calls us to do as Christians to fulfill the work of God. The Gospel passage mentioned in this article, Matthew 25:35-36, speaks to this Lenten call. On the surface, in our lives of blessed abundance, these can seem like easy tasks to fulfill. But take another look at them: the first two seem relatively easy; write a check to a food bank, gather pennies in our Rice Bowls or plastic buckets, or volunteer at a soup kitchen. These are cut-and-dry works of charity.

The more truly difficult tasks follow: Who are the strangers or the people we don't know well in our lives and are we truly welcoming toward them - even if they don't fit into our mental boxes of who is Catholic and who is not? Who are the ill, and do we make it a point in our lives to reach out to them and provide comfort to them and their families? Who are the prisoners, in physical, economic and emotional prisons, and what do we do to visit them and love them as brothers and sisters in Christ?

The point of departure in our understanding of the difference between these "easy" tasks and "hard" tasks, I believe, comes with our willingness to see ourselves as brothers and sisters in Christ. The easy tasks are the ones where we can easily distance ourselves from our brothers and sisters, whereas the hard ones require more intimacy, compassion, and proverbial face-time. Furthermore, I think that the easy tasks allow us to think of ourselves as holier-than-thou, where as the hard tasks challenge us to embrace humility.



As Jim mentions in his article, and as I can attest to from my experience at this prison, the most difficult part was being in proximity to those who needed my compassion. I shared Jim's fear, and speaking on behalf of the women Jim mentions, there is something unnerving for a woman to be in a prison with so many men! As I think I mentioned to some of you at the Principal's Coffee in December, this experience, was my "Saul Moment" where I felt as if the Lord humbled me with a faith-filled 2x4! These are not easy tasks, but when you undertake them, the Lord promises us grace in abundance.

So I leave you with this as a point of reflection after reading this article: Are you willing to hear God's voice and do the "hard" tasks? Are you willing to see those around you as brothers and sisters in Christ and act with humility and compassion?

This year will include the fifth grade in all three days.
April 26,27 & 28 2009


Mini course Week is designed to bring skills to our Middle School Students that they don’t always have a chance to experience. It is a fun way for the middle school students to learn about hobbies, careers and interests that are in our community.

We are asking you to share your Talent and Time with our middle school students. If you can share your skills in subjects such as: Sewing, Fishing, Advertising, Cooking, Architecture, Finance Planning Crafts, Photography, Art, Dance, Rock Climbing or any other skill, please call Christine Champlin at 635.5859.



K-4 Book Club
For those who have students who want to take part in the K-4 book club but who were unable to attend the first meeting:

The next K-4 book club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March, 9, 3:00-4:15 PM, in the Eagle's Nest. Book club is free, and books and snacks are provided. If your student wants to attend the next meeting, please stop by the Eagle's Nest during conferences on Friday, February 19, to pick up the following:

1. a book for your student (they do not have covers on them); please ask your student to create a cover for the book before our March meeting; and 2. a "Most Important Word" handout; please ask your student to complete this handout and bring it along to the March meeting.

Mrs. Alyea's 3rd Grade Class is working on their service project this year; Pennies for Peace.
The Pennies for Peace program is designed to help students broaden their cultural horizons and learn about their capacities as philanthropists. It educates students about the world beyond their experience and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time. Students learn the rewards of sharing and working together to bring hope and education opportunities to the children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. While a penny is virtually worthless, in impoverished countries a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. Please as a family collect your pennies and send them in, there are jars at the front office and in Mrs. Alyea's classroom. We will send you an update on our total collection and what that means for children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Thank you for your participation in this great event.
