We are looking for some new recruits for PTO. There are lots of positions within the PTO (and will be up for election soon, but in order to function, we need a select group of people to serve on the executive committee. These are year long positions that last from July 1 – June 30. We are looking to hold elections for the executive committee to get some fresh perspective and ideas to the PTO. Please read through the 4 executive positions and think about whether you might possess some skill or talent that could make our PTO bigger, brighter and better than ever.
Chair: The Chair presides over all meetings of the PTO common and that of the PTO executive committee. He/she also recruits committee members and delegates responsibilities as necessary to fulfill the function of PTO. The Chair is an ex-officio member of SAC (School Advisory Council) and should attend such meetings and other PTO committee meetings as necessary. He/she shall ensure that the by-laws as adopted are followed.
Co-Chair: The Co-chair, in the absence of the chair, shall perform all the duties of the Chair. The Co-chair shall serve as Chair-elect for the following school year. The Co-chair shall act as historian to archive newspaper articles and photographs and maintain the PTO section of the website. He/she shall coordinate the Saint John’s Catholic School Information fair and/or Back to School Night as needed.
Secretary: The Secretary keeps minutes of the PTO at all the meetings both common and executive gatherings. He/she also keeps a contact list of all board members. Secretary presents the minutes for approval or correction. He/she shall notify all members of organization meetings and handle all correspondence as requested such as Thank you notes and fliers.
Treasurer: The Treasurer accounts for all monies of the PTO. Purchase Orders for money spent are approved and submitted to the Business Office for payment to vendors. Money received is counted and remitted to the Business Office for deposit. Monthly the Treasurer obtains the detail list of PTO revenue and expense recorded by the Business Office that month, verifies their accuracy and presents monthly financial reports at regular PTO meetings. The Treasurer works with the Business Office and the PTO Chair to establish an annual PTO budget each May. The Treasurer also coordinates with fundraising event chairs and other PTO members to assist with the financial aspect of fundraisers and community social events and answers questions related to the receipt of cash and payment of invoices.
If you are interested in fulfilling any of these positions, please submit a short bio about yourself, the position you seek and why you want the position next year, so we may compile a ballot and hold an official election just after spring break. Dear St. John's families-
I'd like to share this incredible article with you as we head into the season of Lent. In Lent, too often we focus on what we are to "give up", what we will deny ourselves. But this comes at the expense of asking ourselves what we can do more of - what Christ calls us to do as Christians to fulfill the work of God. The Gospel passage mentioned in this article, Matthew 25:35-36, speaks to this Lenten call. On the surface, in our lives of blessed abundance, these can seem like easy tasks to fulfill. But take another look at them: the first two seem relatively easy; write a check to a food bank, gather pennies in our Rice Bowls or plastic buckets, or volunteer at a soup kitchen. These are cut-and-dry works of charity.
The more truly difficult tasks follow: Who are the strangers or the people we don't know well in our lives and are we truly welcoming toward them - even if they don't fit into our mental boxes of who is Catholic and who is not? Who are the ill, and do we make it a point in our lives to reach out to them and provide comfort to them and their families? Who are the prisoners, in physical, economic and emotional prisons, and what do we do to visit them and love them as brothers and sisters in Christ?
The point of departure in our understanding of the difference between these "easy" tasks and "hard" tasks, I believe, comes with our willingness to see ourselves as brothers and sisters in Christ. The easy tasks are the ones where we can easily distance ourselves from our brothers and sisters, whereas the hard ones require more intimacy, compassion, and proverbial face-time. Furthermore, I think that the easy tasks allow us to think of ourselves as holier-than-thou, where as the hard tasks challenge us to embrace humility.
As Jim mentions in his article, and as I can attest to from my experience at this prison, the most difficult part was being in proximity to those who needed my compassion. I shared Jim's fear, and speaking on behalf of the women Jim mentions, there is something unnerving for a woman to be in a prison with so many men! As I think I mentioned to some of you at the Principal's Coffee in December, this experience, was my "Saul Moment" where I felt as if the Lord humbled me with a faith-filled 2x4! These are not easy tasks, but when you undertake them, the Lord promises us grace in abundance.
So I leave you with this as a point of reflection after reading this article: Are you willing to hear God's voice and do the "hard" tasks? Are you willing to see those around you as brothers and sisters in Christ and act with humility and compassion?
May you have a grace-filled Lenten Season!

If you can share your skills in subjects such as: Sewing, Fishing, Advertising, Cooking, Architecture, Finance Planning Crafts, Photography, Art, Dance, Rock Climbing or any other skill, please call Christine Champlin at 635.5859.
K-4 Book Club
For those who have students who want to take part in the K-4 book club but who were unable to attend the first meeting:
The next K-4 book club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March, 9, 3:00-4:15 PM, in the Eagle's Nest. Book club is free, and books and snacks are provided. If your student wants to attend the next meeting, please stop by the Eagle's Nest during conferences on Friday, February 19, to pick up the following:
1. a book for your student (they do not have covers on them); please ask your student to create a cover for the book before our March meeting; and 2. a "Most Important Word" handout; please ask your student to complete this handout and bring it along to the March meeting.

Mrs. Alyea's 3rd Grade Class is working on their service project this year; Pennies for Peace.
The Pennies for Peace program is designed to help students broaden their cultural horizons and learn about their capacities as philanthropists. It educates students about the world beyond their experience and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time. Students learn the rewards of sharing and working together to bring hope and education opportunities to the children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. While a penny is virtually worthless, in impoverished countries a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. Please as a family collect your pennies and send them in, there are jars at the front office and in Mrs. Alyea's classroom. We will send you an update on our total collection and what that means for children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Thank you for your participation in this great event.

Dear St. John’s Parents-
Next week we will have parent-teacher conferences. We will be trying something a bit different when it comes to signing up for the conferences. The sign up sheet will now be online on our website – please check out our website to sign up for the times that work for you. I would strongly encourage each family to sign up for a conference. This is a great way to see the classrooms, visit with the teachers, and find out ways to help your student succeed. In line with the Catholic teachings on Catholic Schools, schools are to work in partnership with parents –these conferences are the perfect way to build the partnership with your student’s teachers!
I found this great tip sheet online to help parents prepare for parent-teacher conferences. I particularly like #1 and #8 – it helps to engage your student in the parent-school partnership and helps them take ownership of their learning.
Ten Tips for a Successful Parent-Teacher Conference

FATHER & DAUGHTER DANCE TONIGHT!
Thank you to everyone who have ordered dance tickets in advance. We will have a “Will Call” table at the front doors to the Eagle’s Nest with your dinner, dance, and photo tickets. Dinner is from 5:30 – 6:30 in the Eagle’s Nest. The dance is in the gym from 6:30 to 8:30 in the gym. The photo booth and games are in the rotunda and gym hallway. You can still buy tickets at the door! $25/couple at the door…$20 before 3:00 today!
MARDI GRAS AND ASH WENDESDAY
Tuesday February 16, at 2:15 Middle School instrumentalist will be playing “When the Saint Go Marching In” and will lead the procession down to the Gym. We will start in the Middle School and proceed down to the Elementary, going thru the front doors. Parents are welcome to join us. We will parade in the gym, going around in circles until the last class is in. Mrs. Hennessey will lead in a prayer. Students can wear their beads of gold, purple and pink. Then we will sing the Celtic Alleluia and bury it in a chest. We will leave quietly and go back to the classrooms to get backpacks and get ready for the loop.
ASH WEDNESDAY – We will be attending Mass, please have your student in their Mass attire.
BOX TOPS AND SOUP LABELS
Happy February St. John's Families. We wanted to thank everyone for collecting Box Tops and Campbell Soup Labels. We also want to remind everyone the importance of collecting and that these programs bring St. John's cash as well as other items. For the winning class we have a special prize at the end of the school year. The top four classes are as follows: Cunningham: 1125, Hennessy: 1005, Mertens: 983, and Martinek: 780. We have posted a new collection sheet for Box Tops. For February, the tops and labels need to be turned into your child's teacher by the 26th. ITBS Testing
There has been a slight change to the ITBS testing from our original calendar, because of some changes requested by the Office of Catholic Schools. On February 16-17-18 there will be the testing for ACRE (grades 5 & 8), and ITBS Cognitive testing grades 3-5-7 February 22-25 will be for the regular ITBS grades 2-8.

Dear St. John’s Parents-
I hope that this letter finds you warm and safe in this unexpected crazy weather!
We had an incredible Catholic School’s Week last week! The students had a ball! It was so fun to see all of the school spirit and to see the joy of each student participating in the events designed to celebrate Catholic Schools. We have an amazing school – made up of incredible teachers, students, and parents. I very special thanks goes out to the CSW committee volunteers who made this week possible for us – especially Briana Lasher and her tireless work behind the scenes – Thank you!
Next week we will have parent-teacher conferences. We will be trying something a bit different when it comes to signing up for the conferences. The sign up sheet will now be online on our website – please check out our website to sign up for the times that work for you. I would strongly encourage each family to sign up for a conference. This is a great way to see the classrooms, visit with the teachers, and find out ways to help your student succeed. In line with the Catholic teachings on Catholic Schools, schools are to work in partnership with parents –these conferences are the perfect way to build the partnership with your student’s teachers!
I found this great tip sheet online to help parents prepare for parent-teacher conferences. I particularly like #1 and #8 – it helps to engage your student in the parent-school partnership and helps them take ownership of their learning.

Tuesday February 16, at 2:15:
Middle School instrumentalist will be playing “When the Saint Go Marching In” and will lead the procession down to the Gym. We will start in the Middle School and proceed down to the Elementary, going thru the front doors. Parents are welcome to join us. We will parade in the gym, going around in circles until the last class is in. Mrs. Hennessey will lead in a prayer.
Students can wear their beads of gold, purple and pink. .
Then we will sing the Celtic Alleluia and bury it in a chest. We will leave quietly and go back to the classrooms to get backpacks and get ready for the loop.
ASH WEDNESDAY – We will be attending Mass, please have your student in their Mass attire.

Dear St. John’s Parents-
I hope that this email finds you getting ready for all of the festivities of Catholic Schools Week – here at the school, we’re full steam ahead!
As a reminder to everyone, don’t forget to turn in your RSVP for our fantastic lunch on Thursday – you don’t want to miss this event! Also we’re in need to some volunteers for the Sock Hop – all parent volunteers are welcome for this fun event. If you want to sign up to volunteer, be sure to use our new and improved volunteer sign-up page on our website!
I did want to take some time here to explain how St. John’s is preparing for the upcoming ITBS test at the end of February. As you may know, this is a standardized test we administer to grades 2-8. It is an important test for us in that we are able to see how our students compare to other area Catholic Schools and how we compare nationally. This is our “proof is in the pudding” test for our academic programming. Last year, I was able to see how our students needed to improve their math computation and reading comprehension scores across all grade levels, but especially in the younger grades. With this in mind, we adjusted our school schedule to allow for more focused math and reading times first thing in the morning. All educational research points to “time on task” as an indicator to test score improvement. Additionally, we implemented the once a week Math Lab for the younger grades. This was done with the intent of improving basic math computation and the memorization of basic math facts. We have seen growth this year in our formative and periodic assessments performed during Math Lab, so I am hoping this will yield improved test scores for these grades.
I would ask that as we get closer to the testing dates at the end of February that students come prepared to test- make sure that they are well rested and that they have had a protein-filled breakfast to keep them fueled throughout the morning. This will really help!

It’s that time of year to start planning our Annual Sock Hop to kick off Catholic School’s Week!
We are planning a fun-filled family event and we need your help.See the volunteer sign up sheet and log in those volunteer hours. (Remember you need 50!) the sheet is posted on the website. We need volunteers for the clean-up crew, door greeter, photo booth, and food service. Please sign up to help us make this year’s Sock Hop a fun time for all St. John’s school and parish families. ART SHOW
Please come to the 8th annual CSW Art Show will start Jan. 30. Time and Place will be: 5th – 8th grade will be in the foyer of the Church Saturday, Jan. 30, 4:30 Mass thru Thursday, Feb. 4th. This is an opportunity for the older students to display art to the parish. Kindergarten – 4th will be displayed in the halls of the elementary during CSW and be up for the next 2 weeks. All art work will be given back afterwards. Some artwork will be saved for an upcoming display at the Loveland Library in March. I will notify the student/parent if the work will be detained. We have 2 boards reserved for the month of March again.

PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR
We need your preregistration by January 29TH to give your family first priority for the 2010-2011 school year.
On February 4th we will be hosting our Open House and new families will be enrolling at that time.
Enrollment in St. John's school is allocated in the following order of priority:
1. Current St. John the Evangelist Catholic School families
2. Active parishioners of St. John the Evangelist Church who are new to the school
3. Active parishioners from other Catholic parishes in the local area
4. Active parishioners of a parish outside the local area who currently have children enrolled in a Catholic elementary school and are transferring to St. John the Evangelist
5. All others
Further enrollment materials will be distributed in February.
FREE DENTAL CHECK UP FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
Dr. Gerken’s office called to inform us of the day they will be giving free dental care to those who can’t afford it, or are having hard times. It will be held on February 5th, and they have about 10 slots available. For more information please call the office at 663-7711.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK ACTIVITIES!

Greetings St. John’s Families,
Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching and we have many great events planned for your child and the whole family. The theme for the year’s celebration is “Dividends for Life”.
Each school day we will celebrate with and outreach to the many different communities that are part of Catholic Education. The following is a schedule of events for the week so please mark your calendars!

Art will be displayed throughout the hallways and in the church foyer.
Saturday, January 30th – Sock Hop!
5:30 - 8:00 pm, Hoying Gym – all families welcome!
Saturday/Sunday January 30th and 31st – Mass “In our Parish”
At each Mass Dr. Amodio will be speaking about the school and there will be a short DVD presentation. We will also be collecting prayer requests from parishioners so that our students can pray for our congregation during the week.
ACTION: 1. We will need volunteer families to collect these prayer cards at the end of each mass. Please contact Briana Lasher if you are interested in helping. brianalasher@comcast.net.
2. Please have your children to wear their uniforms to Mass.
Monday February 1st – “Our Community”
Third Annual Birthday Bag Community Service Project. Please see the list on the other side to determine what item your student(s) are to bring to add to the bag. After each class puts their items in the bags, we will donate them to local agencies who will distribute them to families who may not have the resources to celebrate a child’s birthday.
ACTION: Please have the students bring their items to school. We will also be in the loop on Friday January 29th collecting items for the bags.
Tuesday, February 2nd– “Vocation Day”
Each class will be adopting a staff member or a “feeder” church to say thank you for supporting our child’s education. The classes will be putting together thank you notes, goodies and prayers for these special people. We will be asking families to donate items for these thank you baskets.
ACTION: Please help the room parents by bringing in a few dollars to purchase items for the baskets.
Wednesday, February 3rd – “Nation Day”
**EARLY RELEASE** MASS will be held at 8:30. (Note:Mass uniforms please!) This is also Father Franks Birthday; we will be celebrating with him. We will be doing a LIVING ROSARY prayer service at 10:30 am for world peace. The service will be held in Hoying Gym. This is sure to be an amazing event as the students are representing the beads of the rosary. Please join us!
ACTION: Saint John’s Booster Club will be hosting a Culver’s Fund Raiser Night tonight from 5-8pm. Please come support our booster club. 10% of the proceeds go back to our school.
Thursday, February 4th – “Student Day”
To kick off student day Parents, Grandparents, Relatives and Friends are invited to come and have LUNCH WITH STUDENTS. RSVP forms will be sent home after the break, be sure to RSVP by January 22nd. RSVPs are required whether you plan on attending or not. After a fun lunch we will be cheering on the Staff VS. 8th Grade in an Olympic Games Competition. Feel free to come watch the mayhem in the Hoying Gym at 2pm!
Friday, February 5th –Teacher Appreciation Day - NO SCHOOL
The Catholic Schools Week committee will be providing a brunch for the teachers to enjoy.

Dear St. John’s Parents-
I hope that this email finds you getting ready for all of the festivities of Catholic Schools Week – here at the school, we’re full steam ahead!
As a reminder to everyone, don’t forget to turn in your RSVP for our fantastic lunch on Thursday – you don’t want to miss this event! Also we’re in need to some volunteers for the Sock Hop – all parent volunteers are welcome for this fun event. If you want to sign up to volunteer, be sure to use our new and improved volunteer sign-up page on our website!
I did want to take some time here to explain how St. John’s is preparing for the upcoming ITBS test at the end of February. As you may know, this is a standardized test we administer to grades 2-8. It is an important test for us in that we are able to see how our students compare to other area Catholic Schools and how we compare nationally. This is our “proof is in the pudding” test for our academic programming. Last year, I was able to see how our students needed to improve their math computation and reading comprehension scores across all grade levels, but especially in the younger grades. With this in mind, we adjusted our school schedule to allow for more focused math and reading times first thing in the morning. All educational research points to “time on task” as an indicator to test score improvement. Additionally, we implemented the once a week Math Lab for the younger grades. This was done with the intent of improving basic math computation and the memorization of basic math facts. We have seen growth this year in our formative and periodic assessments performed during Math Lab, so I am hoping this will yield improved test scores for these grades.
I would ask that as we get closer to the testing dates at the end of February that students come prepared to test- make sure that they are well rested and that they have had a protein-filled breakfast to keep them fueled throughout the morning. This will really help!

It’s that time of year to start planning our Annual Sock Hop to kick off Catholic School’s Week!
We are planning a fun-filled family event and we need your help.See the volunteer sign up sheet and log in those volunteer hours. (Remember you need 50!) the sheet is posted on the website. We need volunteers for the clean-up crew, door greeter, photo booth, and food service. Please sign up to help us make this year’s Sock Hop a fun time for all St. John’s school and parish families. ART SHOW
Please come to the 8th annual CSW Art Show will start Jan. 30. Time and Place will be: 5th – 8th grade will be in the foyer of the Church Saturday, Jan. 30, 4:30 Mass thru Thursday, Feb. 4th. This is an opportunity for the older students to display art to the parish. Kindergarten – 4th will be displayed in the halls of the elementary during CSW and be up for the next 2 weeks. All art work will be given back afterwards. Some artwork will be saved for an upcoming display at the Loveland Library in March. I will notify the student/parent if the work will be detained. We have 2 boards reserved for the month of March again.
AFTER SCHOOL BOOK CLUB GRADES K-4
To help encourage and support a love of reading, we are starting a new after-school book club for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The club is free, and we will meet 3:00-4:15 PM the second Tuesday of each month, beginning February 9. We will supply the books, the materials, and a snack. We will have books available during Catholic Schools Week, so students can read their first selections before the first meeting. For further information, please contact Pam Coke (pamelacoke@msn.com

ITBS Testing
There has been a slight change to the ITBS testing from our original calendar, because of some changes requested by the Office of Catholic Schools. On February 16-17-18 there will be the testing for ACRE (grades 5 & 8), and ITBS Cognitive testing grades 3-5-7 February 22-25 will be for the regular ITBS grades 2-8.
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR
We need your preregistration by January 29TH to give your family first priority for the 2010-2011 school year.
On February 4th we will be hosting our Open House and new families will be enrolling at that time.
Enrollment in St. John's school is allocated in the following order of priority:
1. Current St. John the Evangelist Catholic School families
2. Active parishioners of St. John the Evangelist Church who are new to the school
3. Active parishioners from other Catholic parishes in the local area
4. Active parishioners of a parish outside the local area who currently have children enrolled in a Catholic elementary school and are transferring to St. John the Evangelist
5. All others
Further enrollment materials will be distributed in February.
FREE DENTAL CHECK UP FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
Dr. Gerken’s office called to inform us of the day they will be giving free dental care to those who can’t afford it, or are having hard times. It will be held on February 5th, and they have about 10 slots available. For more information please call the office at 663-7711.

Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching and we have many great events planned for your child and the whole family. The theme for the year’s celebration is “Dividends for Life”.
Each school day we will celebrate with and outreach to the many different communities that are part of Catholic Education. The following is a schedule of events for the week so please mark your calendars!

Art will be displayed throughout the hallways and in the church foyer.

Saturday/Sunday January 30th and 31st – Mass “In our Parish”
At each Mass Dr. Amodio will be speaking about the school and there will be a short DVD presentation. We will also be collecting prayer requests from parishioners so that our students can pray for our congregation during the week.
ACTION: 1. We will need volunteer families to collect these prayer cards at the end of each mass. Please contact Briana Lasher if you are interested in helping. brianalasher@comcast.net.

Monday February 1st – “Our Community”
Third Annual Birthday Bag Community Service Project. Please see the list on the other side to determine what item your student(s) are to bring to add to the bag. After each class puts their items in the bags, we will donate them to local agencies who will distribute them to families who may not have the resources to celebrate a child’s birthday.
ACTION: Please have the students bring their items to school. We will also be in the loop on Friday January 29th collecting items for the bags.
Tuesday, February 2nd– “Vocation Day”
Each class will be adopting a staff member or a “feeder” church to say thank you for supporting our child’s education. The classes will be putting together thank you notes, goodies and prayers for these special people. We will be asking families to donate items for these thank you baskets.
ACTION: Please help the room parents by bringing in a few dollars to purchase items for the baskets.
Wednesday, February 3rd – “Nation Day”
**EARLY RELEASE** MASS will be held at 8:30. (Note:Mass uniforms please!) This is also Father Franks Birthday; we will be celebrating with him. We will be doing a LIVING ROSARY prayer service at 10:30 am for world peace. The service will be held in Hoying Gym. This is sure to be an amazing event as the students are representing the beads of the rosary. Please join us!
ACTION: Saint John’s Booster Club will be hosting a Culver’s Fund Raiser Night tonight from 5-8pm. Please come support our booster club. 10% of the proceeds go back to our school.
Thursday, February 4th – “Student Day”
To kick off student day Parents, Grandparents, Relatives and Friends are invited to come and have LUNCH WITH STUDENTS. RSVP forms will be sent home after the break, be sure to RSVP by January 22nd. RSVPs are required whether you plan on attending or not. After a fun lunch we will be cheering on the Staff VS. 8th Grade in an Olympic Games Competition. Feel free to come watch the mayhem in the Hoying Gym at 2pm!
Friday, February 5th –Teacher Appreciation Day - NO SCHOOL
The Catholic Schools Week committee will be providing a brunch for the teachers to enjoy.

KINGHT OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW CONTEST
All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on January 23, at 3:00 pm at Sister Carolyn Hoying's Gym. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. The winners will receive an official Knights of Columbus leather basketball. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. KINGHT OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW CONTEST
All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on January 23, at 3:00 pm at Sister Carolyn Hoying's Gym. All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. The winners will receive an official Knights of Columbus leather basketball. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching and we have many great events planned for your child and the whole family. The theme for the year’s celebration is “Dividends for Life”.
Each school day we will celebrate with and outreach to the many different communities that are part of Catholic Education. The following is a schedule of events for the week so please mark your calendars!

Art will be displayed throughout the hallways and in the church foyer.
Saturday, January 30th – Sock Hop!
5:30 - 8:00 pm, Hoying Gym – all families welcome!
Saturday/Sunday January 30th and 31st – Mass “In our Parish”
At each Mass Dr. Amodio will be speaking about the school and there will be a short DVD presentation. We will also be collecting prayer requests from parishioners so that our students can pray for our congregation during the week.
ACTION: 1. We will need volunteer families to collect these prayer cards at the end of each mass. Please contact Briana Lasher if you are interested in helping. brianalasher@comcast.net.
2. Please have your children to wear their uniforms to Mass.
Monday February 1st – “Our Community”
Third Annual Birthday Bag Community Service Project. Please see the list on the other side to determine what item your student(s) are to bring to add to the bag. After each class puts their items in the bags, we will donate them to local agencies who will distribute them to families who may not have the resources to celebrate a child’s birthday.
ACTION: Please have the students bring their items to school. We will also be in the loop on Friday January 29th collecting items for the bags.
Tuesday, February 2nd– “Vocation Day”
Each class will be adopting a staff member or a “feeder” church to say thank you for supporting our child’s education. The classes will be putting together thank you notes, goodies and prayers for these special people. We will be asking families to donate items for these thank you baskets.
ACTION: Please help the room parents by bringing in a few dollars to purchase items for the baskets.
Wednesday, February 3rd – “Nation Day”
**EARLY RELEASE** MASS will be held at 8:30. (Note:Mass uniforms please!) This is also Father Franks Birthday; we will be celebrating with himJ. We will be doing a LIVING ROSARY prayer service at 10:30 am for world peace. The service will be held in Hoying Gym. This is sure to be an amazing event as the students are representing the beads of the rosary. Please join us!
ACTION: Saint John’s Booster Club will be hosting a Culver’s Fund Raiser Night tonight from 5-8pm. Please come support our booster club. 10% of the proceeds go back to our school.
Thursday, February 4th – “Student Day”
To kick off student day Parents, Grandparents, Relatives and Friends are invited to come and have LUNCH WITH STUDENTS. RSVP forms will be sent home after the break, be sure to RSVP by January 22nd. RSVPs are required whether you plan on attending or not. After a fun lunch we will be cheering on the Staff VS. 8th Grade in an Olympic Games Competition. Feel free to come watch the mayhem in the Hoying Gym at 2pm!
Friday, February 5th –Teacher Appreciation Day - NO SCHOOL

Love the Learning. Build our Friendships. Live the Faith
Dear St. John's Parents-
At this time in our liturgical year, it is that time of coming down from an elevated spiritual place of Christmas and moving to a place of Ordinary Time. This Ordinary-ness is at a time of the year where the days are still short, and the nights are long - evoking a sense of darkness, both physically and spiritually. It's the spiritual equivalent of a kid's sugar rush. And if it's anything like the Amodio kids, that rush usually ends with a complete melt-down at about 6:00 when the sun goes down, and ain't nobody happy when that happens!
It's right around this time of year that I pull out one of my favorite pieces of reflection: "Joshua and the Children" by Fr. Joseph Girzone. It is a beautiful story of Jesus's love for children, and how children often act as the role models for parents in these dark seasons of Ordinary-ness. It is also about how when followers of Christ lose track of the importance of children in their community's life, Jesus is saddened - as children truly are the most favored in Christ's presence. Not the politics, not the relations between adults, not the squabbles about who is right and who is wrong in the faith and which side of the fence they are on. Above all - it's the children who matter as they are truly the future of our faith and often times teach us the most profound lessons in our faith journey. As a Catholic educator, it is the shot in the arm I need about this time of year.
I'd like to share an excerpt from the book for you that I think is particularly beautiful in this time of the liturgical season moving into Ordinary Time.
"Father Donnelly did make a few comments on the Gospel, about the gentleness and understanding of Jesus. He went about every day doing good, healing, counseling, comforting, and nowhere, except in one place, does anyone ever thank him. In spite of the people's ingratitude, Jesus never stopped doing good. It is the lesson that his followers need today more than ever before. There is so much hurt and misery, and so many wounds to be healed. We have to adopt the forgiving nature of Jesus, who never allowed himself to take offense, so we can, each in his own way, reach out to heal the hurts all around us. It is our children who will ultimately reap the benefits of our goodness, because one day they will have a better world to live in" (p 56-57).
I invite you all to read this book as it is a book chock-full of points for reflection in this time of the year.
We have a busy month coming up at St. John's. A couple of important events that I'd like to highlight:
· Catholic Schools Week is coming! For those of you who are new to the school community, this is a HUGE event. The details of this week have gone home in a flier and are also listed on the website's School News. There are a couple of events during this week that I'd like to encourage all parents to attend. First is the Sock Hop on January 30th - this is a fun event for the whole family and not to be missed. Come join us for some 50s-style fun! On Thursday we have our wonderful family luncheon. This is a great way to connect with other families and visit our school - not to mention having a wonderful lunch brought to us by our top-notch cafeteria staff. Don't forget to RSVP for this event!
· Over the past few months, I have heard from parents that they'd like to learn more about technology and to have a presentation on internet safety - thank you for your input! We have planned two training sessions related to technology, and I invite every parent to attend these sessions. On February 10th at 6:30 in the Eagle's Nest, our webmaster, Samantha Sweeney will be offering a training session on the new website and our online grade book. Come learn about the features of our new powerful website and how to most effectively use our school's new online grade book. Then, on February 24th at 6:30 in the Eagle's Nest, we will have an internet safety presentation by Chris Pond from the Archdiocese's Office of Youth Protection. This session is open to middle school students and all parents preschool-8th grade. I strongly encourage you all to attend this most informational presentation.
Your families remain in my constant prayers.
Please do keep the people of Haiti in your prayers as they struggle to deal with their recent catastrophe.

ITBS Testing
There has been a slight change to the ITBS testing from our original calendar, because of some changes requested by the Office of Catholic Schools. On February 16-17-18 there will be the testing for ACRE (grades 5 & 8), and ITBS Cognitive testing grades 3-5-7 February 22-25 will be for the regular ITBS grades 2-8.
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR
We need your preregistration by January 29TH to give your family first priority for the 2010-2011 school year.
On February 4th we will be hosting our Open House and new families will be enrolling at that time.
Enrollment in St. John's school is allocated in the following order of priority:
1. Current St. John the Evangelist Catholic School families

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK ACTIVITIES!
January 30- February 4, 2010
Greetings St. John’s Families,
Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching and we have many great events planned for your child and the whole family. The theme for the year’s celebration is “Dividends for Life”.
Each school day we will celebrate with and outreach to the many different communities that are part of Catholic Education. The following is a schedule of events for the week so please mark your calendars!
Please stop by and check out your student's art work throughout the week.
Art will be displayed throughout the hallways and in the church foyer.
Saturday, January 30th – Sock Hop!
5:30 - 8:00 pm, Hoying Gym – all families welcome!
Saturday/Sunday January 30th and 31st – Mass “In our Parish”
At each Mass Dr. Amodio will be speaking about the school and there will be a short DVD presentation. We will also be collecting prayer requests from parishioners so that our students can pray for our congregation during the week.
ACTION: 1. We will need volunteer families to collect these prayer cards at the end of each mass. Please contact Briana Lasher if you are interested in helping. brianalasher@comcast.net.
2. Please have your children to wear their uniforms to Mass.
Monday February 1st – “Our Community”
Third Annual Birthday Bag Community Service Project. Please see the list on the other side to determine what item your student(s) are to bring to add to the bag. After each class puts their items in the bags, we will donate them to local agencies who will distribute them to families who may not have the resources to celebrate a child’s birthday.
ACTION: Please have the students bring their items to school. We will also be in the loop on Friday January 29th collecting items for the bags.
Tuesday, February 2nd– “Vocation Day”
Each class will be adopting a staff member or a “feeder” church to say thank you for supporting our child’s education. The classes will be putting together thank you notes, goodies and prayers for these special people. We will be asking families to donate items for these thank you baskets.
ACTION: Please help the room parents by bringing in a few dollars to purchase items for the baskets.
Wednesday, February 3rd – “Nation Day”
**EARLY RELEASE** MASS will be held at 8:30. (Note:Mass uniforms please!) This is also Father Franks Birthday; we will be celebrating with himJ. We will be doing a LIVING ROSARY prayer service at 10:30 am for world peace. The service will be held in Hoying Gym. This is sure to be an amazing event as the students are representing the beads of the rosary. Please join us!
ACTION: Saint John’s Booster Club will be hosting a Culver’s Fund Raiser Night tonight from 5-8pm. Please come support our booster club. 10% of the proceeds go back to our school.
Thursday, February 4th – “Student Day”
To kick off student day Parents, Grandparents, Relatives and Friends are invited to come and have LUNCH WITH STUDENTS. RSVP forms will be sent home after the break, be sure to RSVP by January 22nd. RSVPs are required whether you plan on attending or not. After a fun lunch we will be cheering on the Staff VS. 8th Grade in an Olympic Games Competition. Feel free to come watch the mayhem in the Hoying Gym at 2pm!
Friday, February 5th –Teacher Appreciation Day - NO SCHOOL
The Catholic Schools Week committee will be providing a brunch for the teachers to enjoy.

q Return your RSVP by Jan 22nd for the Luncheon. Even if you cannot make it please return the form and indicate whom your child will sit.
q Please send in your items for the birthday box January 29th.
q Bring in a few dollars for the Thank You Baskets January 29th.

q Make sure the kids wear their uniforms to Mass on the 30th or 31st.

q Students need to wear their Mass uniforms on Wednesday February 3rd.
q Join us on Wednesday for Mass and the Living Rosary.
q Attend lunch on Thursday February 4th..
q Cheer on the staff and students at the Olympic games on Thursday the 4th.
Do you want to help volunteer for any of these events? Please contact Briana Lasher at brianalasher@comcast.net. We are specifically looking for someone to help video tape the living rosary, but there are many other opportunities to help as well.
